The Hozugawa river boat ride (Hozugawa kudari) takes you about 16 km down the Hozu Gorge, from Kameoka to Arashiyama, in a flat-bottomed wooden boat steered by boatmen with poles and oars. It takes about two hours, costs ¥6,000 per adult on the regular shared boat, and drops you on the river right in the middle of Arashiyama — which is why most people pair it with the Sagano Romantic Train going the other way. This guide covers the 2026 fares and timetable, what the operator says about wait times in autumn, and how to plan the day so you do not lose the morning to queues. Facts below were checked on the operator's official site on 13 October 2026.
The short version: in autumn, get to the Kameoka boarding point between 8:00 and 8:30, or book online by the day before. After about 9:30 the queue grows sharply, because that is when the first Sagano trains arrive in Kameoka and their passengers all walk to the boats at once.
Fares, times and the basics (2026)
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Route | Kameoka (boarding point near JR Kameoka Station) → Arashiyama (Togetsukyo Bridge area) |
| Distance / time | About 16 km, about 2 hours (depends on water level) |
| Regular shared boat | Adult ¥6,000 / child (preschool to elementary) ¥4,500 |
| Season timetable (Mar 10 – Dec 13, 2026) | Weekdays: hourly from 9:00 to 15:00 (7 boats). Weekends and holidays: boats leave as they fill |
| Winter timetable (mid-Dec – Mar 9) | Four boats a day: 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 14:30 — open boats, no heating |
| Closed | Dec 29 – Jan 4, a few inspection days, and whenever the river is too high |
| Private (charter) boat | From ¥144,000 per boat for up to 17 people (more in peak periods) |
Children's fares cover preschool to elementary age. The shared boats seat about 24 people, so on a weekend you will share with strangers; that is normal and part of the experience. Fares are the same online and at the window; a 10% discount for disability certificate holders is available only at the window.
Booking: online, same-day, or a tour
There are three ways to get on a boat, and which one you need depends almost entirely on the date.
| Option | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Official online booking | Through the operator's booking partners (LINKTIVITY or KKday), up to the day before | Weekends and anything in November |
| Same-day ticket | Sold at the Kameoka boarding point, first come first served | Weekdays outside the peak, or if you can arrive by 8:30 |
| E-ticket or tour | Third-party e-tickets, or tours that bundle the Sagano train and the boat | Peak autumn, or if you want both legs arranged |
The operator is unusually open about how busy it gets. Its same-day ticket notice (updated 10 October 2026) says the online booking is the surest way to ride; that if one booking partner shows a time as full, the other may still have seats; and that cancellations free up places, so a full time is worth checking again. Same-day tickets are still sold even when online is full, but the number is limited and in the foliage season they can sell out by the afternoon — on 9 October 2026, an ordinary Friday, they sold out at 14:15.
When to arrive: the 9:30 problem
The boat ride itself is calm; the waiting is what goes wrong. According to the operator's own guidance:
- Regular season (March to mid-December): the 9:00 boat often has little or no wait. From about 9:30 it gets busier, because Sagano train passengers start arriving.
- Autumn foliage season: the operator recommends arriving between 8:00 and 8:30, and no later than about 9:00. Early arrivals usually board with little or no wait; same-day tickets can sell out in the afternoon.
- Winter (mid-December to March 9): the 10:00 boat often has no wait, and on many days you can board all day.
The practical consequence is a little counter-intuitive. The classic plan — take the Sagano train up to Kameoka, then take the boat down — puts you in the boarding queue at exactly the busiest moment, together with everyone else from your train. If you are riding on a same-day ticket in November, it is often better to take the JR train to Kameoka first thing, ride the boat down on an early departure, and see the Sagano train from Arashiyama later in the day (or skip it). If you already hold an online boat reservation, the train-then-boat order is fine, because you are not competing for same-day seats.
Getting to the boarding point in Kameoka
| From | How | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Station | JR Sagano (San-in) Line to Kameoka Station, then walk to the boarding point | Rapid trains take about 20–25 minutes. The operator says you can always come by JR or bus even if the Sagano train is full |
| Arashiyama / Saga | JR from Saga-Arashiyama to Kameoka (under 10 minutes), or the Sagano Romantic Train to Torokko Kameoka | From Torokko Kameoka you need a connecting bus or taxi to the boats |
| Osaka | JR to Kyoto, then the JR Sagano Line — or Hankyu to Arashiyama and JR from Saga-Arashiyama | Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes from Osaka Station |
The boat ends in Arashiyama, so you never have to come back to Kameoka. Arashiyama has three stations — JR Saga-Arashiyama, Randen Arashiyama and Hankyu Arashiyama — which makes the return to Kyoto or Osaka easy. Our Arashiyama autumn route picks up from the river with a timed walk of the temples, and getting around Kyoto explains why the train beats the bus for this side of the city.
The Sagano train + boat combo
The Sagano Romantic Train runs along the same gorge, on the opposite bank and much higher up, between Torokko Saga (next to JR Saga-Arashiyama) and Torokko Kameoka. Doing the train one way and the boat the other gives you the gorge from above and then from the water. Here are the three ways to arrange it.
| Plan | Order | Good | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | Sagano train Saga → Kameoka, connecting bus, boat back to Arashiyama | The famous combination; ends in Arashiyama for the afternoon | Downhill trains to Kameoka sell out first in autumn; you reach the boats at the busiest time |
| Early boat | JR to Kameoka by 8:30, boat down, Sagano train later from Torokko Saga | Shortest boat queue; the afternoon train often has seats | The train ride is a round trip or a one-way back on JR |
| Tour | A bundled tour from Kyoto or Osaka with both tickets | Nothing to book separately; transfers handled | Fixed times and a group pace |
One detail makes the "early boat" plan work: in autumn the Sagano train's downhill trains (towards Kameoka) sell out much earlier than the uphill ones. On 13 October 2026, the official availability page showed every downhill train from 9:02 to 14:02 as full, while most uphill trains from Kameoka still had seats. Our Sagano Romantic Train guide covers ticket release times and what to do when your train is sold out.
What the ride is actually like
The first part is wide and slow, with farmland and hills. Then the valley closes in, the water speeds up through a series of small rapids, and the boatmen take turns on the long pole at the bow, the oar and the rudder at the back — you will see them push off rocks they have been steering around for years. It is not white-water rafting: the boats are big and steady, and the rapids are short. Expect a little spray at the front. Near the end the river widens again, you pass the floating food boats that row out to sell grilled squid and drinks, and you land among the rowing boats of Arashiyama.
- Seats: the front rows get the most spray and the best view of the rapids; the back is drier.
- Clothes: a light waterproof layer helps all year. From December the boats run open, without a cover or heating, so wear a proper coat, gloves and a hat.
- Bags: keep large luggage out of it — use station lockers or send bags ahead. A small backpack is fine.
- Children: child fares cover preschool to elementary age. The ride is two hours with no toilet, so plan a stop before boarding.
- Rain: light rain does not stop the boats; high water does.
Hozugawa in autumn: is it worth it?
In mid-to-late November, the gorge walls turn red and orange and the ride is at its best — it is one of the few ways to see Arashiyama's colors without a crowd around you, because you are on the water for two hours. The trade-off is the queue and the date: the same weekend that brings the best color brings the longest wait. For the 2026 forecast and how Arashiyama compares with the rest of Kyoto, see the Kyoto autumn temples guide; the forecast currently puts Arashiyama's peak from around late November.
How much is the Hozugawa river boat ride in 2026?
The regular shared boat costs ¥6,000 per adult and ¥4,500 per child (preschool to elementary school). A private charter boat starts at ¥144,000 for up to 17 people.
How long is the Hozugawa boat ride?
About two hours for roughly 16 km, from Kameoka to Arashiyama. The exact time depends on the water level.
Do I need to book the Hozugawa boat in advance?
Not always — same-day tickets are sold at the Kameoka boarding point. But in the autumn foliage season and at weekends, booking online (possible until the day before) is the surest way to ride, and same-day tickets can sell out in the afternoon.
What time should I arrive for the Hozugawa boat in autumn?
The operator recommends arriving between 8:00 and 8:30, and no later than about 9:00. From around 9:30 it gets much busier because passengers from the Sagano Romantic Train start arriving.
Does the Hozugawa boat run in winter?
Yes. From mid-December to March 9 it runs four boats a day (10:00, 11:30, 13:00 and 14:30). The boats are open with no cover or heating, so dress warmly. It is closed from December 29 to January 4.
Should I take the Sagano train or the Hozugawa boat?
If you have time, do both: they follow the same gorge, the train from high above and the boat on the water. If you must choose, the train is 25 minutes and ¥880, the boat is two hours and ¥6,000 — the boat is the bigger experience, the train the easier one to fit in.
Is the Hozugawa boat ride safe for children?
It is a steady wooden boat steered by experienced boatmen, not white-water rafting, and children's fares are available. The ride lasts two hours with no toilet on board, so plan accordingly.
