Sagano Romantic Train 2026: Tickets When It's Sold Out, Best Direction, and the Last Season of the Old Cars

A 25-minute open-sided train along the Hozu Gorge, and one of the hardest tickets in Kyoto in November. Here is how the tickets are released, which direction to ride when it's full, and why autumn 2026 is the last season for the current cars.

The Sagano Romantic Train (Sagano Torokko) is a slow sightseeing train that runs about 7 km along the Hozu Gorge between Saga-Arashiyama and Kameoka, in about 25 minutes, for ¥880 one way. It is cheap, short and beautiful — and in November it is one of the hardest tickets to get in Kyoto. This guide explains how the tickets are released, which direction to ride when your train shows as full, and what changes in 2026: the current cars make their last run on December 29, 2026, with new trains due in spring 2027. Facts were checked on the operator's official site and JR West's announcement on 13 October 2026.

The short version: online tickets go on sale at 0:00 Japan time, one month before the travel date, only on the official booking site. If the Kameoka-bound trains are full, look at the trains coming back from Kameoka — in autumn they sell out much later. And if everything is gone, same-day tickets are still sold at three of the four stations.

Closed daysMost Wednesdays outside peak periods (check the calendar — it runs daily in much of the autumn peak). Closed December 16, 2026
Season endThe current cars' last run is December 29, 2026. New trains debut in spring 2027

Torokko Saga is right next to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, and Torokko Arashiyama is a short walk from the bamboo grove — so for most visitors the train starts in Arashiyama and ends in the countryside at Kameoka, where the Hozugawa river boats leave from. Children aged 1 to 5 ride free with an adult (one per adult) unless they take their own seat.

The one-month rule is the key to November. For a ride on Saturday, November 21, sales open at 0:00 on October 21 (Japan time) — late afternoon or evening the day before in Europe and the Americas. Popular trains on peak weekends can go in minutes. If you are reading this after your date has opened, do not give up: the operator's site says that even when online tickets are sold out, a limited number are sold at the station windows on the day.

When it's sold out: ride the other way

This is the most useful thing in this guide. The famous day out is "train up to Kameoka, boat back down to Arashiyama", so the trains towards Kameoka in the morning sell out first. On 13 October 2026 — a month before peak color — the official availability page showed every Kameoka-bound train from 9:02 to 14:02 as full, while the trains running back from Kameoka at 12:30, 13:30, 14:30, 15:30 and 16:30 all still had seats.

The "other direction" trick fits neatly with the river boat. The Hozugawa boat operator itself recommends arriving at Kameoka by 8:00–8:30 in the foliage season, because the queue jumps after 9:30 when the first trains from Saga arrive. So: JR to Kameoka early, boat down to Arashiyama, lunch, then ride the train from Torokko Saga or Arashiyama in the afternoon (a round trip) — or skip the boat, go out to Kameoka by JR, and take the uphill train back. Our Hozugawa river boat guide covers boat bookings and wait times.

Which seats: the open car No. 5 and the river side

  • Car No. 5, "The Rich": an open car with no windows — the best view and the most wind. You choose it like any other car when booking online; groups cannot reserve it. Umbrellas are not allowed, and if it rains there is no refund or change on the day. In late November and December it is cold; dress for it.
  • River side: the river switches sides as the line crosses the gorge, so there is no single "right" side for the whole ride. Book the car you want and enjoy both.
  • Standing tickets: when seats are gone, same-day standing tickets may be sold. It is a 25-minute ride, so standing is a reasonable fallback.

Autumn 2026: light-up and the last run of the old cars

JR West announced in September 2026 that the current Sagano Romantic Train cars will retire after their last run on December 29, 2026, and that new trains will start in spring 2027. That makes this autumn the last chance to ride the trains in their current form — and probably a busier December than usual.

  • Light-up along the line: October 24 to December 29, 2026, from 16:30 to the last train (not on December 16). The late-afternoon trains are the ones to book for it.
  • Extra trains: an additional evening pair runs October 24 to December 13 and December 26–27, and another runs November 14–30 and December 5–6. They show up in the online booking for those dates.
  • Peak color: the gorge usually turns from mid-to-late November. For the 2026 forecast, see the Arashiyama autumn route.

Arriving from the airport or another city, our Kyoto access guide covers the options into Kyoto Station, and getting around Kyoto explains why the JR line is the best way out to Arashiyama in autumn, when the buses crawl.

How much does the Sagano Romantic Train cost?

¥880 one way for adults and ¥440 for children aged 6 to 12, whatever section you ride. Groups of 15 or more pay ¥800 per adult.

When do Sagano Romantic Train tickets go on sale?

Online, at 0:00 Japan time exactly one month before the travel date, on the official booking site. Same-day tickets are also sold at Saga, Arashiyama and Kameoka stations in limited numbers.

What can I do if the Sagano Romantic Train is sold out?

Check the trains in the other direction first — in autumn the trains from Kameoka back to Saga sell out much later than the Kameoka-bound ones. Otherwise, queue for same-day tickets when the station windows open, book a tour that includes the train, or take the JR Sagano Line instead.

Which direction is better on the Sagano Romantic Train?

The view is the same both ways. Saga to Kameoka is the classic direction if you plan to take the Hozugawa boat back, but it sells out first; Kameoka to Saga is usually easier to book.

Is the Sagano Romantic Train running in 2026?

Yes, until December 29, 2026, when the current cars make their last run. New trains are scheduled to start in spring 2027. It is closed on most Wednesdays outside peak periods and on December 16, 2026.

Is car No. 5 on the Sagano train worth it?

Car No. 5, "The Rich", is an open car with no windows and the best view. It is chosen like any other car when booking online. There is no refund if it rains, and it is cold in late autumn.
