Most visitors assume skiing in Japan means flying to Hokkaido or committing several days to Nagano. You can also do it from Tokyo in a day. GALA Yuzawa in Niigata is built directly on a shinkansen station: you step off the train, walk through the ticket gate, and you are at the base of the slopes. This page covers the 2026–27 season dates, what a day costs, what to rent, and when a rail pass is worth buying.

Season dates and ticket prices are from GALA Yuzawa's own 2026–27 price page. Children under school age ski free, up to two per adult. Note that the resort has announced its South area will be closed for the 2026–27 season, so some courses will not be open.

How the day works

In season, some Joetsu Shinkansen trains run through to GALA Yuzawa station instead of stopping at Echigo-Yuzawa. Check the timetable for direct trains when you book, because not every train continues to GALA. From the platform you go up into the station building, which doubles as the ski centre with the rental shop and the gondola. The gondola takes you up to the main slopes, so expect to ride it before your first run.

Book your train seats the day before on busy weekends, since ski trains fill up. Aim for a morning train out and a mid-to-late afternoon train back, which still gets you to Tokyo in time for dinner.

Rentals: bring nothing but warm clothes

You can rent skis, snowboards, boots and ski wear at the base, so you do not need to carry gear from Tokyo. Booking the rental in advance saves time at the counter, and a lift-plus-rental package covers both in one step. Bring your own gloves, a hat and goggles if you have them, plus a dry layer for the train home.

Does the JR TOKYO Wide Pass pay off?

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass costs ¥16,000 for adults and covers three consecutive days of JR East travel, including the shinkansen to GALA Yuzawa in season. A simple round trip to GALA comes to around ¥14,000, so the pass does not pay off for skiing alone. It does when you add a second trip in the same three days: JR East's own example of GALA Yuzawa plus Nikko adds up to about ¥21,500 in regular fares.

Is it right for you?

  • Good fit: first-timers, families with small children, and anyone who wants one snow day inside a Tokyo trip.
  • Less ideal: experienced skiers after deep powder and long runs. For that, Hokkaido or Nagano reward a few nights, not a day trip.
  • Plan for weekends: trains and slopes are busiest on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, so go on a weekday if you can.

Can you ski as a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes. GALA Yuzawa is about 71 minutes from Tokyo Station by Joetsu Shinkansen, and the ski area starts at the station, so a day trip is realistic.

When does GALA Yuzawa open for 2026–27?

The 2026–27 season runs from December 19, 2026 to May 5, 2027, according to the resort's price page.

How much is a GALA Yuzawa lift ticket?

For 2026–27, an adult day ticket is ¥8,000 at the counter or ¥7,500 online, and a child's is ¥4,000 or ¥3,500 online.
